Route through the Christmas markets in France

christmas in a motorhome

If you want to treat yourself to a 100% cosy Christmas getaway, we invite you to rent a campervan and enjoy the Christmas in the South of France. Remember to put your number plate when you write your letter to Olentzero if you want him to leave you presents in the motorhome wherever you are.

Here is the route we did last Christmas. It's not to give envy, it's to give ideas 😉.

Day 1: Vitoria- Bayonne

Our first stop was the Bayonne Christmas market due to its proximity to Vitoria. We wanted to go on the day of the lantern launch but the dates didn't work out and we thought it would be too crowded to go with 2 little girls. Supposedly last year it was supposed to be the last one but... 🤷‍♀️

Day 2: Bordeaux

Stroll through the Allées de Tourny, among the wooden chalets, and enjoy the many activities and walks with the family. Chorus singers, acrobats, stilt walkers and even elves will make for an unforgettable Christmas in Bordeaux. Workshops are also organised for children and adults:

  • Animated deer chalet
  • Types of gift wrapping
  • Make-up for children with animation
  • Creating eco-responsible Christmas decorations
  • Photos with Father Christmas (for a "small" fee 😅)

There is also an illuminated carousel in front of the Grand Theatre to make your children dream!

Day 3: Olentzero in Poitiers

olentzero in a motorhomeThis was the most special day of the whole getaway as we started the day opening the presents that Olentzero had left us in the storage room of the motorhome🎄🎄.

We loved the Parada in Poitiers as it has a very well located motorhome area. You can walk to the city centre with no problem. It also had many free activities such as the Christmas tourist train or pony rides.

Day 4: Futurocope

Futuroscope is a theme park where the attractions are based on technology and especially on the latest cinematic, audiovisual and robotic systems of the future.

Our girls are 2 and 4 years old and it is designed for older children. It has a children's area called futoropolis but the rest of the attractions are for older children. We loved the night-time water and light show. the key to dreams.

Day 5: Crevin- Nantes (la machine de l'ile)

We woke up in Crevin, a very quiet town with a motorhome area that we loved. We were struck by the fact that if you shop in the local shops you get free tokens to refill the motorhome's water tank.

Machines de l'Ile is a mixture of the invented worlds of Jules Verne, the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci and the industrial history of Nantes, in an exceptional site in the former shipyards. Fancy a ride on an elephant? This is the place for you!

Day 6: Rennes

The capital of Brittany has also managed to preserve its small town atmosphere, where everything can be done on foot... We fell in love with its Christmas market, especially the light and sound show projected on the façade of the town hall. Impressive!

Day 7: Dinan

The charm of the medieval town combined with the magic of Christmas enchanted us. Have you heard of the enchanted Christmas bubbles?

Day 8: Saint-Malo

Without a doubt, we were most impressed by the Christmas market, especially the ice rink at the foot of the city walls. If there is a city that is good at Christmas lights, it is this one. Don't miss the mulled wine ☺️

Day 9: Le mont saint Michel

We passed it by because we had already been there but it is highly recommended. There is a motorhome area where you can leave your vehicle and then they will take you there by bus.

Day 10: New Year's Eve in Paris

We arrived just in time to see the famous Dragons Lantern Festival in the Jardin d'Acclimatation. We liked it a lot but it wasn't a great choice as it got late and we ended up too tired to make any New Year's Eve plans. So we had a nice dinner in the motorhome and went to sleep 😂. The next day we visited Paris but as we had already been there it was an express visit. The truth is that with the girls it is much more comfortable for us to visit smaller cities, so much transport and being far from the motorhome is a big inconvenience.

Day 11: Disneyland Paris

Are you looking forward to visiting Disneyland Paris and have you ever thought of going by motorhome? It's a GREAT idea. In fact, our Capuchin motorhome has been there 3 times this year and all the families (including ours, of course) have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Disney has an official car park for motorhomes, so you can spend the night in the park itself.

Fancy a plan like this for Christmas?
